Today is White Cane Safety Day. Every year on the 15th of October, we celebrate the achievements of people who are blind and stress the importance of the white cane.
The white cane is a symbol of blindness and low vision. It allows blind people to walk independently, to go where they want to go, and to do the things they want to do. It also serves as a signal to tell that the person has a visual impairment, which is important when crossing roads and when asking people for information or assistance.
The mission of White Cane Safety Day is to educate the world about how blind and visually impaired people can work and live independently and give back to the community. Today, we celebrate and honor the abilities, successes and contributions of blind people in a sighted world.
