Tomorrow is "National Make A Difference Day". Every year on the fourth Saturday in October, millions of volunteers come together to improve the lives of others..
Join millions of people this Saturday, October 24th, to celebrate National Make A Difference Day . What started as a USA TODAY initiative, backed by Gannett Company and joined by Points of Light, in 1992, has grown into the largest national day of community service. Its mission is simple: to improve the lives of others.
Every year thousands of volunteer initiatives from around the nation are being entered for a chance to win one of thirteen $10,000 grants, donated by Newman’s Own, to help support their communities. Past honorees included projects which involved collecting food, clothes or blankets for those in needs. Other initiatives range from clean- up efforts, providing books to boost literacy projects or offering medical check-ups to people who couldn’t afford it otherwise.
Last year one of the award winners included Operation Access from Sonoma County, CA for their efforts on “Make a Difference Day” in 2013. Daniel Rabkin, program manager of Sonoma County Operation Access, and his colleagues came together with a group of ophthalmologists and their staffs to save the eyesight of 24 area agricultural workers and day laborers. Plus they aided another six needy cataract patients, who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford sight-saving surgery.
Do you feel inspired and would like to get involved, but don’t know where to start? Points of Light can help you find an organization that fits your interests in your area and is looking for volunteers. All it takes is taking the first step!
